Abstract: We generally associate heart disease with men, but heart disease isn’t just a man’s disease. Heart attack, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are devastating to women, too. Many women believe that cancer is more of a threat, but they're mistaken. Nearly twice as many women in the United States die of heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases as from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer. In fact, coronary heart disease, which causes heart attack, is the leading cause of death for American women. A woman’s risk of dying from heart disease is six times greater than her risk of dying of breast cancer.
Even though coronary heart disease is the leading cause of death in American women, new studies reveal that women are less likely than men to get the appropriate treatment at the appropriate time. As a result, women have a poorer prognosis compared with men. Women are at a greater risk of dying within one year of a first recognized heart attack or after bypass surgery than men, and women are more than twice as likely as men to be disabled with heart failure within six years of a heart attack.
It is evident from these facts that women need to be more knowledgeable of their risk factors and prevention strategies. They need to become partners with their healthcare providers, and self-advocates in their treatment.

Abstract: The introduction of early detection methods such as DRE and the PSA test has played a critical role in the downward migration of prostate cancer stage seen over the past decade. For example, research studies in the general population have consistently demonstrated relatively improved mortality rates with early detection of prostate cancer. However, the benefit of prostate cancer screening for the overall American population remains controversial. This presentation provides clinicians with up-to-date knowledge on the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer to facilitate their contribution to the reduction of prostate cancer morbidity and mortality in Florida.

Abstract: As a result of the increasing demands on public health response to emergency preparedness issues, Public Health Nurses (PHN) are challenged with responding to a variety of incidents that affect public well-being. Due to the variety of response types such as sheltering, points of distribution for mass-vaccination and medical care settings, there are inherent challenges of response efforts and the roles/responsibilities of that response. This training program addresses nursing concerns regarding assessment and intervention skills that are not practiced on a routine basis, but may be utilized during an incident.
The material in this course is based on the Refresher Nursing Skills Training Manual. This manual was designed and intended to provide the PHN with a brief systems review as well as targeted disease processes and injuries that may be encountered in a Special Needs Shelter..
This course is co-provided by the Florida Department of Health and St. Petersburg College.
